Hey there! Mental wealth is all about intentionally building up skills, tools, attitudes, and behaviors to live a well-rounded life in every aspect. This includes things like social connections, physical health, spiritual well-being, career satisfaction, financial stability, and psychological health. If you're looking to boost your mental wealth, here are 8 quick tips to help you get there!

  1. Identify your values and goals Take a moment to truly dig deep within yourself and reflect on your innermost desires and goals. By engaging in self-reflection, you can uncover what truly matters to you and gain a clearer understanding of what you want to achieve in life. This process is not only essential for personal growth, but it is also a vital component of tip 2.

  2. Evaluate your behaviors It is helpful to take inventory of actions, routines, and thought patterns. This can provide insight into how they align with your values and goals. Consider whether these align positively or negatively with your well-being and development. This clarity can assist in making deliberate choices and engaging in productive behaviors.

  3. Develop a change plan According to the French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, "a goal without a plan is just a wish." This statement holds true for both personal goals and personal growth. It is important to create a plan outlining the specific steps and timeline for achieving your desired goals or making changes in your life.

  4. Set boundaries in your environment Step number 4 is absolutely crucial in the journey to mental wealth. It holds the key to creating a sanctuary of order, control, and safety within your environment. By setting boundaries, you not only protect yourself but also ensure that everything and everyone around you aligns with your values and goals. As the renowned social worker Brene Brown eloquently puts it, establishing boundaries allows you to stand in your integrity while still holding a space of generosity and compassion for those in your life. It is a powerful act of self-love and protection that can truly transform your mental well-being.

  5. Practice gratitude Research indicates the positive impact of practicing gratitude. Engaging in gratitude has been shown to improve overall quality of life, boost life satisfaction, enhance interpersonal relationships, and even promote physical well-being. Take a deliberate moment each day to reflect on and appreciate the various aspects of your life for which you are thankful, including personal attributes and accomplishments.

  6. Have a growth mindset A growth mindset entails a commitment to personal development and actively taking deliberate measures to foster such growth. Individuals with a growth mindset actively seek opportunities to acquire new coping mechanisms and gain alternative perspectives, often through engaging in activities such as reading literature, participating in therapy sessions, listening to podcasts, and attending seminars.

  7. Practice mindfulness Have you ever found yourself doing something but your mind was wandering elsewhere, so much so that you didn't even remember doing the activity? Mindfulness is all about intentionally focusing on the present moment. By being mindful, you can truly immerse yourself in the here and now, become more aware of your surroundings, and fully appreciate life as it unfolds. Incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine!

  8. Give yourself compassion This final step is a powerful reminder to treat yourself with kindness and compassion as you embrace your entire journey. Take a moment to truly acknowledge and mourn your losses, while also reflecting on the lessons learned from your mistakes along the way. You have the power to choose not to let your past failures define you. Instead, focus on celebrating your accomplishments and strengths. Embrace self-care and prioritize your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. This is the ultimate act of self-love and compassion.

The value of mental wealth is truly invaluable! While the journey to improve and maintain mental well-being may have its challenges, it is absolutely worth it. Remember, you deserve to prioritize your mental health and happiness every step of the way.

Welcome, It's Time To Talk Mental Wealth!

Hey there, I'm Jalessa! I wear many hats - a mom, a wife, a Christian, and an entrepreneur. I've been utilizing mental health services for a while now, as I've been on my own healing journey. On top of that, I work as a mental health therapist, addictions counselor, and clinical supervisor for other therapists. So yes, this is yet another blog focused on improving mental health, but the reason behind it all sets it apart.

My Why?

About 5 years ago, I started on my path to healing, a couple of years after becoming a licensed therapist. I had thought about going to therapy before, but never really took that next step. I did attend a session about 4 years before starting my healing journey, but I don't really count that experience. During grad school, I decided to go for it and sat down with a therapist to open up about my story. During our conversation, she asked me a simple but profound question - "what is your goal?" At that moment, I was unsure how to answer. Just saying I wanted to feel better, do better, and be better didn't seem like enough. Looking back now, I see that figuring out what I truly wanted and needed to work on was a crucial part of my journey towards healing.

Isn't feeling "better" just the beginning? For me, it's never been enough! I've never been one to do things small. Everything I tackle, I do it in a big way! Just take a look at my life - I couldn't stop at just one child, I went ahead and multiplied it by four!

This blog is my heart laid bare. It is the culmination of my painstaking journey towards healing, a journey filled with hardships and triumphs. Through my own struggles and the work I do with others, I have come to realize that simply learning to cope and heal is good, but learning to truly thrive in every aspect of life is nothing short of miraculous!

What's Next?

In 2008, a new term called 'mental wealth' was introduced in the United Kingdom. It refers to the combined cognitive and emotional resources of individuals in a society. The idea is that in order to enhance 'mental wealth', countries should focus on investing in things like healthcare, education, and social programs that help people build and maintain their mental well-being. It's all about nurturing and growing each person's mental 'capital'. Isn't that a neat concept?

In this blog, we will focus on sharing tips, strategies, and personal experiences to help you prosper mentally by increasing awareness, debunking stigmas, and normalizing mental wealth. I intend to publish a blog each week. This content is for everyone. Whether you are unsure about the need to enhance your mental health, just starting your mental wellness journey, or have been on this lifelong journey for some time like myself, let's talk mental wealth! Here's a sneak peek at the first set of posts that you can look forward to:

Wealth, by definition, is the possession of an abundance of something. Mental wealth surpasses mental health by concentrating on enhancing resources, skills, knowledge, and attitudes that can assist you in achieving success in all areas of your life. I will leave you with a quote and two questions. First, the same question that my first therapist asked me: "What is your goal?" and is achieving that goal enough?

And for the quote: "Success is not what you have, it's what you are."- Charlamagne tha God
